Having first met as doctoral researchers, Mimi Kelly and Victoria Souliman have developed an ongoing research collaboration examining representations of female subjectivity and the reworking of surrealist aesthetics in contemporary visual culture. Their work explores questions of gender, embodiment, care, identity and agency across a range of contemporary visual media, while reassessing the legacy of surrealism from feminist perspectives. Together, they have co-authored ‘Could Fleabag be a Parisienne? Camille Cottin’s Star Image and a New French Femininity’ (TV/Series, “Series and Stars”, 19, 2022), ‘Reclaiming Surrealist Aesthetics in Popular Visual Culture: The Music Videos of Angèle, FKA Twigs and St. Vincent’ (Journal of Romance Studies, 23.3, 2023) and ‘Bodily Illness and Care in Charlotte Abramow's Surrealistic Maurice: tristesse et rigolade (2018)’ (Australian Journal of French Studies, 62.3-4, 2025).
